Voices from the Camper workshop
On the outskirts of Alaró, a small village in central Mallorca, a group of like-minded creative people gathered to explore, deconstruct and construct new footwear ideas in an exceptional working environment, for eight days.
The natural, rural surroundings were sublime. Creatives worked from dawn till dusk, ate beautiful, seasonal food, drank good wine, discussed and created the perfect environment for ‘magic’ to happen. Past participants of the workshop remain part of a ‘family’, and stay connected, friends forever. The bonds made here are very strong.
This is the fifth edition of the unique Camper Son Fortesa Workshop. For Camper, we like to think of it as an ‘experience’ rather than a workshop.
Creatives worked from dawn till dusk, ate beautiful, seasonal food, drank good wine, discussed and created the perfect environment for ‘magic’ to happen.
10 – 12 special people are selected not only for their talent, but for their personality, approach to design and life in general. It’s a ‘dream team’…
They are flown in from all over the world and invited to ‘play’ at our ‘Ideas Factory’, near the Camper headquarters.
To generate the flow of ideas, we use rather unconventional methods and designed a thoughtful and challenging brief.
The only prerequisite is that all ideas generation should fulfil the Camper ‘ethos’, whilst retaining each individual designer´s handwriting, which is so important.
This year, our group of 12 was more diverse than ever. From Japan, Czech Republic, Greece, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, France, Italy, Portugal and the UK. It goes without say that they were all super talented…but we already knew that though.
To generate the flow of ideas, we use rather unconventional methods and designed a thoughtful and challenging brief. This year´s theme, of “Inconformista” allowed participants more freedom to experiment than ever, which was exactly our aim.
The workshop started with an intensive idea generation and inspiration workshop called ‘Love and the secret of good design’. Where the ‘secret’ was indeed revealed….
All the designers were asked to work in a different way to which they were usually accustomed. They were perhaps pushed out of their comfort zone and invited to question ‘design’ itself, in order to express themselves and a possible new direction for Camper.
They were perhaps pushed out of their comfort zone and invited to question ‘design’ itself
There were no boundaries or limitations, only to work with the theme of ‘Inconformista’ and to produce 10 prototypes – a daunting task in just eight days.
But the result was exceptional, as expressed by the attendees themselves:
“Seriously, I am addicted to Son Fortesa, and I’m in withdrawal now. I’ll try to draw on the energy I found there – to design, create and make, even though I have had to leave that place and all those people behind. What a journey!”
“Poetry. It is an overwhelming thought, when that time comes to mind. It was a privilege to have worked with so many different talented people coming from different backgrounds. It was also inspiring to have worked with people that know how to get the best out of you. The amazing surroundings and incredible food become another sweet detail in an amazing week.”
“Everyone was talented. Our senses were mixed at the workshop so it was like a successful chemical reaction!”
“The opportunity that Camper gave us was exceptional. Working on a project on when you can experiment freely, in a place that looks like paradise with really kind people and amazing food. What can be better? It was like a wonderful (hard) working holiday!”
“This was a really amazing experience. I had the chance to experiment with a lot of different film making styles to realize my videos. I didn’t feel my work or myself judged by someone or something. The workshop was an ‘island of freedom’. The sunshine and the beautiful mountains surrounding the villa inspired harmony“.
