Pilgrim: Bruno. Temple: Spreepark, Berlin

March 24, 2014
New Temples New Pilgrims: Bruno

In motion. Everything moves in Berlin.

At different rhythms, life in the city follows unusual beats. From the slow turning of an advertising sign or captive planets orbiting the world clock at Alexanderplatz, to the speed of cars along the avenues. The Temple we visited with Bruno, the Spreepark, does not fit well in this setting. How do you explain an amusement park where all the action has come to a halt? Not easily. Unless you see it through Bruno’s eyes. We decided to give it a go.

We understand Bruno’s fascination with the Spreepark

The first thing we noticed about this Pilgrim was his determination. His heart brought him to Berlin from Barcelona, and when love broke down, he decided to stay and make Berlin his home. So much so that he even opened a tapas bar. There is so much to discover in the city that if a walk sharpens the appetite, his bar is the place to be.

In a pair of comfortable shoes and at a brisk pace, we walked with him to his Temple. Bruno is a vigorous walker, familiar with the secrets of the city. And this is one of the best kept. The Spreepark, an old East Germany-era fun park, has been abandoned for the last ten years, and is scattered with remnants from the previous three decades. Among the trees and the vegetation we discovered a roller coaster with its cars still lined up ready to go, eager to plunge into the gaping jaws of a fearsome-looking psychedelic cat. The Ferris wheel still looms over the park, its cabins begging for someone to climb in. Beside the Ferris wheel is an old abandoned Viking ship. Spooky? Not in the least. However eerie it can be, the park is today a majestic wonderland, on the roadmap of every urban explorer worth the name.

Now we understand Bruno’s fascination with the Spreepark. Fun is often off the beaten track, where you least expect it.
