Just six months ago Camper, the Spanish footwear brand, announced that it would take part in this historic race, with Emirates Team New Zealand to manage the campaign. Camper is a family-owned company that started making shoes on the island of Mallorca in 1877. This is the company’s first entry in the Volvo Ocean Race and a big step onto the international sports sponsorship stage.

Dalia Saliamonas, Project Director, CAMPER in the Volvo Ocean Race, says: “Six months after announcing our participation, it is fantastic to announce this exciting team. We are incredibly proud to be working with such a talented, experienced and passionate crew, and we are looking forward to the journey ahead.”

Skipper Chris Nicholson said of his crew: “This is one of the hardest events to win in sailing and we set out to bring together the best sailing team possible.

“We have a great mixture of experience and youth; I have been lucky enough to sail with most of them over the years and we have a team that will work really well together.

“The spirit within the CAMPER team, and by that I mean everyone, from the design, office, management, build, sponsors, reflects a real genuine passion to achieve. I believe that we have created a team that can win the Volvo Ocean Race. We have a great sponsor in Camper and we are looking forward to sharing this race with them.”

Since announcing the entry, CAMPER and Emirates Team New Zealand’s principal designer Marcelino Botin and the build team at Cookson Boats have begun construction of the CAMPER yacht in Auckland. The build is currently well underway with the hull now complete. The team plan to have the boat in the water by late April 2011 where it will undergo sea trials before being shipped to Spain.

Hull designs for the CAMPER Volvo Ocean Race project have gone through testing in a high-speed tank-test facility in Belgium.

Six days of tests on three three-metre models in Belgium were overseen by CAMPER’s principal designer Marcelino Botin and skipper Chris Nicholson. They are working with engineers from the University of Southampton, England. The scale models, which were built in England, went through 300 tests over six days. The high-speed tank is 100m long, 6m wide and 4m deep. The aim is to test computer design projections on the quite different hull forms in scale models of the VO 70 yacht. Results from the tanks tests will allow designers to assess quickly the position of appendages (rudders and keel) and hull shape.

Emirates Team New Zealand operations manager Kevin Shoebridge, who is managing the CAMPER project, said the start of tank testing is an important milestone for the campaign. He said: “We have almost 20 naval architects, structural and mechanical engineers, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) engineers, sail and mast designers  and software developers based at Auckland (New Zealand)  and Santander (Spain) working on CAMPER project. Multiple hull designs and sail combinations have been run through a CFD   computer program which computes air and water flow. The sail design team has already had two sessions in the Auckland University wind tunnel.” Naval architect Marcelino Botin, a principal of Botin Carkeek Yacht Design based at Santander, is also principal designer for the Emirates Team New Zealand.

He designed the syndicate’s America’s Cup class yachts for the 2007 Valencia challenge. More recently he designed the Emirates TP52 yacht which won the 2009 Audi MedCup season.  That yacht, modified at the end of the 2009 season, is competing on the 2010 Audi MedCup circuit. The first regatta of the season held in Cascais, Portugal in May, was won by Emirates Team New Zealand. Botin Carkeek designed its first VO70 yacht for the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race. With Chris Nicholson on board the yacht was placed second.

A VO70 yacht weighs a maximum of 14,000 kg and 7,400 kg of that is in the keel. The keel can be canted to 40deg to give extra stability when the yacht is on the wind. All-up weight for an offshore leg – which includes sails, food and fuel – is 19,500 kg. The yachts carry massive sails on the 31.5m mast. Upwind sails are 355sq m. Downwind sails at 675sq m are bigger than a full-size tennis court.

Camper in the Volvo Ocean Race

The Camper project for the Volvo Ocean Race will reach another milestone early next month.

Camper announced today that construction of the VO70 yacht will start in the first week of August.

Crew selection is also well advanced and Camper has announced today that experienced Spanish round-the-world yachtsman Roberto Bermudez de Castro has joined the team.

It will be his fifth round-the-world race, most recently as skipper of Team Delta Lloyd in 2008-09. He was a watch captain on Brazil 1 in 2004-05 and raced the southern ocean legs on board Assa Abloy in 2001-02.

Known throughout the sailing word as “Chuny”, his first round-the-world experience was as a watch leader and helmsman on board the Spanish entry in the 1993-94 Whitbread.

Chuny, a member of the Spanish Olympic team at Athens in 2004, has been a regular on the competitive MedCup TP52 circuit and sailed with the Spanish America’s Cup team at San Diego in 1995 and at Auckland in 2000.

He is an industrial engineer, married with three children.

The Camper campaign hit the ground running when it was announced in April.

The design team – led by principal designer Marcelino Botin of Botin Carkeek Yacht Design based at Santander – had already been working on VO70 design.

Emirates Team New Zealand – which will manage the Camper project – immediately assigned members of its design team to the project.

The team’s operations manager Kevin Shoebridge said: “We have almost 20 naval architects, structural and mechanical engineers, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) engineers, sail and mast designers and software developers based at Auckland and Santander working on the Camper project.

“Multiple hull designs and sail combinations have been run through a CFD computer program which computes air and water flow. The sail design team has already had two sessions in the Auckland University wind tunnel.

“Marcelino Botin and skipper Chris Nicholson have overseen tank-tests on hull models at Southampton, England, and Liege, Belgium.”

The scale models, which were built in England, underwent 300 tests over six days at the high-speed tank at Liege to test computer design projections on the quite different hull forms in scale models of the VO 70 yacht.

Results from the tanks tests have allowed designers to assess quickly the position of appendages (rudders and keel) and hull shape.

With the yacht build scheduled to start on August 9 at the Cookson Yard at Auckland, the design team will come together next week to make final decisions.

Boat builders will start building the mould, the first step in a process that will involve more than 30 tradesmen and over 38,000 hours.

The hull and deck will be constructed from carbon fibre over a nomex honeycomb core, to produce a light but very strong hull capable of standing up to the rigours of the 39,000 nautical mile race.

The yacht – with deck hardware, electrical, electronic and hydraulic systems fitted – will be trucked to the Emirates Team New Zealand base in early April. Keel, bulb and rudders will be fitted before the yacht is rigged.

Three months of sea trials off New Zealand will follow. The sailing crew will be looking for strong winds and big seas to test handling and reliability before shipping the yacht to Europe in July.

Camper, the Spanish-based international footwear brand, is a family-owned company which started making shoes on the Spanish island of Majorca in 1877. Today Camper operates directly 320 stores and “shop-inshop” locations in 42 countries and distributes its products through 2800 independent retailers.

The Volvo Ocean Race starts at Alicante, Spain, in October 2011 and will finish at Galway, Ireland, in June 2012. Stopover ports are Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajai (Brazil), Miami (USA), Lisbon (Portugal) and Lorient (France).
