Camper Together with Doshi Levien

As a part of the Together programme, designers Doshi Levien have worked with Camper for several years to develop both interior projects and now shoes.  As we launch the new season, we thought you´d like to know a little more about the design duo. This month, we focus on their work for Camper Stores – their style, concept and background.

To date, Doshi Levien have collaborated on three stores for Camper; in Rome (October 2011), Vancouver (August 2012) and Boston (September 2012).

Doshi Levien’s work celebrates the hybrid and explores the coming together of cultures, technology, story telling, industrial design and fine craftsmanship. These new stores are filled with impressive details that illustrate the distinctive personality of their style.

They explain: “Our concept for Camper was inspired by the earthy, sun baked, solid architectural elements of the Mediterranean. It has an authentic, monolithic simplicity of materials, with magical highlights. It references the idea of an ETERNAL SUMMER”.

Nipa Doshi was born in Mumbai and Jonathan Levien in Scotland. They met at the Royal College of Art in London back in 1995.

After studying, Nipa went to work at the studio of the architect, David Chipperfield, while Jonathan worked with industrial designer Ross Lovegrove, whose work is inspired by organic form and structure.

Doshi Levien’s work celebrates the hybrid and explores the coming together of cultures, technology, story telling, industrial design and fine craftsmanship.

Despite the obvious differences in their backgrounds and the juxtaposition of their training, the two became the perfect complement. In 2000 they decided to open the Doshi Levien studio and they quickly earned a reputation as one of the most creative duos on the international scene.

Their projects are hybrid creations, blending different cultures and always combining technology with craftsmanship. Nipa contributes her artistic insight having developed a deep appreciation of Indian handicrafts, especially textiles, whilst Jonathan develops the technical aspects of any project.

Amongst their accolades, Doshi Levien were the guests of honour at IMM Cologne 2012, the International Furnishing Show, where they showcased their concept of the perfect home with the project entitled “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage”. They have also worked on projects with Intel, Moroso , BD Barcelona Design and Haagen Dazs.
