Camper Together: Romain Kremer’s world

Camper Together with Romain Kremer

I didn’t choose to be a designer; I can’t really explain how I started. I studied dance and later I realized that I wanted to create stuff from my hands not using my body.

My inspiration is based on feelings, smell, it’s almost religious, sacred. You believe in something and it simply appears. It is something intuitive, sometimes things just make sense.

The biggest challenge of designing shoes is to be modern but, at the same time, to be real

I think a lot about what I want to do, but not precisely. I have conditioned myself to think and create, at a time, that is exactly the right moment. It ‘s more thinking about anything that inspires me so that I can be ready when the actual moment comes.

I am inspired by playground.  I love the construction of games and playful things. Increasingly I realize that my deepest inspiration comes from fantasy.

When you design you don’t think about reality or the economic crisis.  The more you think about the troubles, the more you want to forget about them. However the world economic crisis can really be a challenge for designers because it forces us to adapt to new markets, new countries and new mentalities. Knowing that the world is struggling pushes you to be more creative.

My collaboration with Camper started 4 years ago with just a phone call. After that, I travelled to Mallorca for two days to meet everyone and that’s how everything started. At that time, the Camper Together project was really new so I had no idea what the result would be. I always had the image of Camper being connected with design so to me it was a really interesting collaboration.

The biggest challenge of designing shoes is to be modern but, at the same time, to be real, to try to balance creativity and the desires of people and try to bring them into my world.

The best thing about the Camper collection is the way technical features disguised in a casual shoe.

What I like most about my work with Camper is the “minimalist” style. I work on shapes and colours as a block in order to create something very pure and strong.  For example this season we developed new men sandals with colourful rubber heel wrap that protects the shoe and adds a futuristic look. Meanwhile for women we constructed sandals with an architectural 9cm mono block wedge.

For me, the best thing about the Camper collection is the way technical features disguised in a casual shoe.
