Brave New World: The 2016 Camper International Design Workshop
On June 15, 2016, we invited a small group of emerging international designers to challenge the design status quo at a workshop titled “Brave New World” in South Korea at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Over 10 days, the designers were given the unique opportunity to live and work together to explore evolving footwear and accessories concepts.
Participants were invited from countries such as Estonia, Russia, the Netherlands, Mexico, and the United States, and hailed from a wide range of disciplines, including fashion, footwear, product, graphic, and spatial design. The purpose was to create inventive designs and push creative boundaries through cultural interaction and artistic expression.
Traditionally, the workshop was held in Mallorca, near our corporate headquarters. This year, however, the workshop moved to Seoul to the futuristic DDP space, designed by iconic architect Zaha Hadid. During the workshop, the group attended seminars and lectures and received technical feedback on design development from both our in-house team and industry experts.
“We live in uncertain times, with people talking about a ‘broken fashion system,’” Workshop Director Adriana Rodriguez said. “We want to find out, through working with young international designers, through critical thinking and collaboration, what we can propose for a new design future. This is not just an educational program, it’s about provoking unique ideas and how these encourage us to think in a new way. ”
The workshop culminated in an exhibition and closing event on June 24. The final works were on display at Gallery Mun in Dongdaemun Design Plaza until June 26.
